Jackson Artist Statement - April 9, 2018
How does one artistic discipline translate to another? How does a musician create works that can exist simultaneously in both visual arts and music? For the past 9 months I have been interested in exploring such tasks. I am interested in bringing these two disciplines together in attempts to understand what happens in the conversation between music and art.
I think that because music is something that exists in the continual projection of time, and art is something more stable and concrete, the benefit is the large amount of interpretation it gives the viewer/listener. Music creates form from abstraction, while art creates abstraction from form. Time exists as a line within music, while within art, time exists as a singular dot.
In my process, I have created an image of a drum with the intaglio and lithography printmaking techniques. In intaglio I used spit bite to create the marks that represent time and pushed the plate across the floor with my foot to create grooves the resemble a cymbal.
The final has an accompanying recording that features a rhythm taken from a guitar piece I was working on at the time. It is from Candombe En Mi, a modernist piece by Maximo Diego Pujol. A Candombe is an “African-derived dance and song genre from Uruguay.”
The recording has two tracks: the rhythm pattern that is sent through effects like delay and flanger; and a drone created by a freeze guitar pedal, which goes into a delay pedal that is being tweaked to create a whipping sort of sound. In spirit of the print’s own abstraction, the music is also slow, deep and abstracted. The delayed notes on the recording mimic the layers created by the litho and intaglio techniques, as if there are two rhythmic patterns occurring at one time.
In conclusion, it was an interesting exercise to question what happens in the conversation between music and art and to explore the opportunity between these two poles.
